The"Mündener
Hornet-Box"
(building guidance)
The "Mündener hornet
box" could successfully be used when settlement and requartering of
hornet peoples.
Building material:
- boards from spruce-fir or Weymouth-pine, 20mm thickly
- cardboard for the roof cover
- nails and screws
- hinges and storm-hooks as catch mechanism for the door
- thin aluminum or zinc sheet lining
(the test flight openings outside all around as woodpecker protection with sheet metal
fitted)
Flight slot (version A, like in the
below-mentioned sketch)
- The flight slot is trained as a 12 cm of long and 1.5
cm broad slot
2 flight holes (version B)
Box base:
Box interior:
-
IMPORTANT NOTE: The
size/dimensions/measurements are the minimum! In order
to obtain an optimal interior of 65 x 25 x 25cm, the boards should be sawed as
specified below:
1 roof, 35 x 35cm;
1 bar over the door, 29 x 5cm;
2 side panels, in each case 65 x 25cm;
1 rear wall, 65 x 29cm;
1 door, 60 x 29 cm;
1 front floor part, 25 x 20cm;
1 rear floor part, 25 x 10cm;
(cut to form both floor parts at a longitudinal fold with 20° angle cut)
Hornet box suspension:
-
At the box rear wall are two stronger stop bars with
drillings, by which the box can be fastened with aluminum
nails or binding wire.
-
The hornet boxes can be attached at edges of clearing,
forest seams, in gardens or also at buildings.
-
The suspension height should amount to about four
meters
-
If possible, the flight hole of the
box should be placed facing east "to catch the morning sun."
-
The air space before the box must be free by branches,
in order to ensure an open approach.
Cleaning of the hornet box:
Before the new season, approximately by 1 May, the old
nest must be removed, since it blocks otherwise the NIST space. In order to enable to
other wintering specialized animals an unimpaired winter peace or development, the
cleaning of the hornet box should not be therefore before the end of of April
